About Stone ChapelThe first Stone Chapel was built in 1786 to house a congregation that had been meeting since 1771 as a small group within St. Thomas’ (Episcopal) in Owings Mills. This group incorporated as one of the first Methodist congregations under the leadership of America’s first Methodist bishop, Francis Asbury, who preached at Stone Chapel on at least two occasions. The original building was replaced by the present, larger, sanctuary in 1862. The pews date to an 1879 renovation; the windows were installed in 1911. In 2006, the Stone Chapel congregation merged with Pleasant Hill UMC in Owings Mills, which now administers the facilities. New Hope counts it a privilege to call this beautiful building home, and is grateful to those who have so lovingly maintained this facility throughout its long and fruitful ministry.
